I haven’t actually WATCHED a lot of anime. Or rather I’ve started some I haven’t finished? But Jessie wants some anime recommendations and I told her it would just be easier to give her a list of everything I’ve watched (and the mangas I’ve read) and plan to watch. (You can thank Ama for nearly every anime I want to watch, honestly. Without Ama I would flail through the internet)

Jessica, I know you specifically said shoujo but shhhh I used to be very shoujo only because I thought gross shoenen fight fight barf but shounen surprised me not just with having better animations in some cases but being FULL OF FEELS I did not expect so I am not listing which are which I SHALL LET YOU DISCOVER THE GLORY or not glory of some of these anime :DDDD

Why haven’t I watched this yet? I’ve not heard ONE bad thing about this. From what I’m told, it’s a fantastic story with beautiful scenery and artwork. If you watch it for only one thing, let it be the art, alright? I’ve seen enough photosets go around and alfjdlaj WOOOORRRR.
Angel Beats
cute artwork, really intriguing plot (I have a thing for afterlife stuff) and an unexpected amount of blood in the first episode. The cuteness left me unprepared. But the artwork!!!! and the plot!!!!!

better known as Ano Hana. Also great artwork. Also deals with the afterlife, but in a different way. Lots of feeeeels. Lots of friendshippiness and friendshippiness that was torn apart and just alfjdlkjf great feels. PERFECT OPENING AND CLOSING THEMES TOO LIKE PERFECT. I thought the opening song was made FOR the anime but nope! I have a whole lot of feels for this though oh GOD
Ano Natsu de Matteru
This is from the same people who did Anohana, which is half the reason I wanted to watch it in the first place. Also, pretty artwork. (I’m shallow shhh) It’s another slice of life about friendship and growing up. I think it’s ~paranormal? But you know. Worth the try!

Have yet to watch this - mostly for uhhh personal reasons (aka I’m a wimpy) - but I have heard great great great things about this. “Another is life changing” says Ama. I believe it’s a psychological horror, so if you’re not into that, you maaaay want to avoid it? It’s getting a live action so I’m a masochist and have decided to watch this (during the day) so I can watch the live action with Ama. Cos I am dumb.
▶ Ao no Exorcist
I don’t know what I was expecting when I first started AoE, but it was much better than anything I might’ve ever expected. Like, afljdflakdj IT’S GREAT. Fantastic artwork, some really great characters and the first half of the anime is really solid. Considering it was created while the manga (which I believe is still ongoing) was still ongoing, the second half is made up so, take it how you will. Lots of feels. Jesus I had a lot of feels and needed a few tissues.
* manga: On-going? I haven’t started the manga yet. I need to organize my time. But. Yes. I managed to sucker a friend into the manga though so yay! Anyway, feels are likely doubled in the manga especially given how the second half of the anime is essentially all AU.
Air Gear
[mild nudity warning; covered with hilarious crows] Am told the ending is a bit flimsy, which is basically the fate of all animes created while on-going. Sigh. There’s a street fighting/racing theme going on, but it comes with great recommendation, which means it is GOOD.
Arakawa Under the Bridge
I don’t even know how to summarize this one, given that I haven’t yet seen it but it has one of those “I’m in debt to you so I’ll be your boyfriend” set ups going on with the privileged boy whose life is saved by a homeless girl.
Bokura ga Ita
Popular boy not popular girl who wind up falling in love and dating but with unresolved issues dealing with a dead past girlfriend. I don’t see a lot of anime (personally because I don’t look around enough) that actually deal with a couple POST getting together as opposed to focusing on the getting together. Also sounds like it has feels, if not a bit of melodrama? COMING TO GRIPS WITH PAST DEATHS AND LEARNING TO TRUST AND ALL THAT GREATNESS it sounds like goodness. You know. In a painful kind of way?
[NOTE FROM ANGIE: Bokura Ga Ita is good for like 8 episodes but then domestic violence is included so it kind of gets real triggery after that (it has 26 episodes)]
BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad
A BAND. STRUGGLING FOR FAME! THAT’S ALL YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW. Right? Right? No, really, that’s all you need to know. I’ve heard good things about it. Also plan to watch the live action and pretend it’s not just about Sato Takeru’s face. (It’s a gr8 face)

I would write all my feels here in all caps because that’s honestly how I feel about them because Bleach is everything I never expected it to be. My boyfriend watched it all the time and tried time after time to get me to watch and I never did cos BOOO FIGHTING GROSS except Ama started rewatching it and she kept barfing feels at me and next thing I knew I was downloading and falling in love. THERE IS A LOT OF GREATNESS ABOUT FRIENDSHIP. AND THERE’S A LOT OF GREY CHARACTERS. AND A LOT OF COMPLEX RELATIONSHIPS. IT’S SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST FIGHTING, OKAY? SO MUCH MORE. AND ICHIGO IS LIKE, ONE OF THE BEST GUYS EVER. HE RESPECTS LADIES AND HE HAS A STUPID HERO COMPLEX AND HE IS THE BEST FREAKING BIG BROTHER IN THE WORLD AND BECAUSE HE GETS IN FIGHTS ALL THE TIME FOR HIS HAIR COLOR HE HAS TO BE A GOOD STUDENT SO PEOPLE STAY OFF HIS CASE AND HIS FAMILY IS CRAZY AND THERE’S SOME SAD STUFF THERE BUT HE’S A /GREAT/ GUY WHO DOESN’T GRAB GIRLS’ WRISTS AND MAKE THEM DO WHAT HE WANTS AND UGH IT KILLS ME. *manga: on-going and v long but VERY worth it if you should decide to get into this. The manga has SO much more than the anime. In fact, the anime sacrifices a lot of characters and realtionships - not just shippy ships but just relationships in general and like alfjdflkaj I trash around while I read it in bed and cry all over again because it is SO great (and it doesn’t have the AU filler plots that the anime uses when waiting for the manga to catch up s i g h)

Please don’t even look at me like that because if you have never watched the sub of this and you only ever watched what was shown on WB in the United States, you really missed out. REALLY MISSED OUT. She is my boo. Everything about this is the cutest. YAAAY MAGIC GIRL YAAAAY DARLING SAKURA! But really, the dub changed/obscured/left out a lot of stuff and that’s awful. Plus it’s (mostly) light and fluffy and fun and just great especially for after watching something heart-wrenching. Also my first OTP originated here.

On my list and waiting to be watched. AMA TELLS ME THE GREATEST THINGS ABOUT THIS AND THINGS ABOUT HOW IT HANDLES MULTIPLE CHARACTERS WITH MULTIPLE STORYLINES REALLY WELL. WHICH IS GREAT. She tells me there’s lots of intrigue, action, and humor and it’s full of morally grey characters and everyone has a story. WHICH IS GR8 STUFF. Amazing side characters and a bit of romance.
Eden of the East
Another one Ama has rec’d me that instantly goes on the liiiiiist. She tells me there is romance but a really great plot and intrigue! WHICH YOU KNOW ALWAYS IMPROVES THE ROMANCE SI? Si. Yes!
▶ Fairy Tail
On going but OH GOSH SO GREAT once again, not entirely what I expected, which is funny because Ama would tell me about it a lot when she first started to rewatch it. AND IT’S (mostly) GREAT. In fact if I graded it, I’d give it probably an A- - just because there ARE a few issues I don’t like, how they degrade Lucy a lot for comical purposes which is gross. But there’s a looooooot of great friendship and there’s these moving speeches about friendship and family that make me weeeep a lot lajfldjakfjd because W O W they are beautiful and just lajfldja claw at the air. It’s fun, it’s funNY, and it gives me a lot of feels. There’s even been times I cried. It’s on-going, though, and I fear the day I catch up. Anyway, like. It’s really great. Lots of fun! The best part about this? It may be a ~shounen, but our MC is TOTES Lucy Heartfilia, who not only has a great name, but is the BEST. It’s a great world of magic and different magical abilities and guilds and just lafjdlkj I can’t say a lot without ruining the glory of it so def look into it.

Classic, right? Not going to elaborate a lot on it because it’s probably wasted words, ahahaha. I’m told, though, the manga is much better so there’s that. I’ve only read the first four volumes of the manga so. D: I watched this dub so one day I’d like to try the subs at least once just to see what it’s like. Watched this in a complete weekend at college once.

Ghost Hunt
Another psychological horror, though I’m told it’s not as scary as Another? Don’t ask me, I hesitate to watch these and I only watch because I’m such a masochist. But if Angie/Ama suggest it, it must be great.

*manga: no anime was ever made of this for which I am FOREVER weeping. Right so, it’s not SHORT - it’s 20-some volumes. BUT IT’S KIND OF MY FAVORITE FOREVER? LIKE. It was my first (and still currently only) gender-bender and the art is cute, the characters are great if not a bit cracky, and it’s just FUN and fantastic. Like alfjdlkfjadlkja :3 I DONNO I READ IT MY SENIOR YEAR IN HIGH SCHOOL AND GOT TO THE POINT WHERE ALL I WAS DOING WAS READING IT AND IT WAS BAD FOR ME BUT SHHH BECAUSE SANO/MIZUKI WERE LOVELY AND NAKATSU WAS GREAT AND I ADORED ALL THE CHARACTERS AND EVERYONE MADE ME INFINITELY HAPPY okay? Yes. Yes good. Definitely worth it if you do choose to read it. 3 live actions have been produced, I believe, with a 4th in the works but I don’t like any of them because I’m a stickler for the manga so my opinion ought to be disregarded.

I LIKE SLICE OF LIFE ANIMES AND I LIKE WHEN KIDS GET STUCK DOING THINGS THEY DON’T EXPECT TO AND FINDING OUT HOW GREAT IT IS. LIKE I MEAN, IT’S JUST THAT PERSONAL GROWTH AND THE RELATIONSHIPS AND FRIENDSHIPS and it sounds like it’s full of that. :3 p.s. the art looks cute

Truth: have seen the gifs around tumblr and thus first took interest because W O W HOW CUTE! It’s got a mystery thing going on. IT JUST LOOKS REALLY GOOD so it’s totally worth a try, right?

[Problematic Themes] You’re facing tsundere characters so it’s bound to happen. The art is def cute, which is what sold me at first? I’m told when it’s goooood it’s good but when it’s questionable it’s QUESTIONABLE so there may be a case of side-eying. Maybe. Tsundere girl “forced” into spending time with a heartbreaker sort to keep her secret. You can see where my reservations come from. But at the same time, I still want to give it a chance.

I watched it because this girl I followed on tumblr was always cranked about it so I figured it was def worth the try. BUT FAMILY FEELS REALLY GET MEEEEE.

I read it all one weekend in college. (I didn’t do a lot in college.) It was fun and, at times, emotional. :3

I ADORE KYOKO THE ANGRY FAIRY TALE PRINCESS AND I AM ANNOYED WITH SHO THE POSSESSIVE BUTTHEAD AND I WISH REN WOULD STOP KEEPING SECRETS BUT EVERYTHING ABOUT IT IS REALLY FUN AND KYOKO’S BEST FRIEND REMINDS ME OF ANGIE AND I REALLY LOVE IT. Basically, Kyoko follows Sho to Tokyo so he can follow his dream of becoming a star except he’s been using her the entire time and taking advantage of how head over heels in love with him she was. In order to take revenge she attempts to take revenge and forsake love, which gets her stuck in the Love Me section of the company she’s at and it’s great and about her becoming an actress and coming to love it and progressing and moving on from Sho the shithead and discovering who SHE is and what SHE wants and I REALLY LOVE IT. I watched the anime too and it wasn’t too bad. Followed the manga pretty well. BUT THE MANGA IS GREAT BUT EXCRUCIATING COS OF HOW OFTEN IT UPDATES AND THE WAY IT DOES (OR DOESN’T) MAKE PROGRESS AND HOW SOMETIMES YOU GET STUCK IN AN ARC WONDERING WHEN IT WILL EVER END BECAUSE, AGAIN, THE WAY IT UPDATES AND JESUS PLEASE SPEED IT ALONG SO I’LL GO HALF A YEAR WITHOUT CHECKING FOR UPDATES JUST SO I CAN BE LIKE SURPRISE 6 NEW CHAPTERS TO READ!!!!

Ever since that fateful incident, Hikari swore to beat Kei in school grades, a sporting event - anything. To do this she has enrolled in the same school as Kei since elementary. Now she attends Hakusenkan, an ultra elite school, that costs her carpenter father a lot of money. Hikari and Kei are the top two students in the school, with Kei holding firmly to that number one position.” I began reading the manga before I started the anime but I haven’t finished the manga. One day I will. I believe the manga does what I don’t see a lot in anime/manga which is NOT ending when a couple pairs up. I believe there was a pairing I didn’t really care for in here and Kei’s PERFECT AT ERRYTHING was certainly a stretch of a trope, but in all fairness it’s fun and cute and has a lot of great friendship stuff going on which was good enough for meeeee. The synopsis doesn’t even touch on them but they are great fun.

ONCE AGAIN I WAS SOLD ON THE ARTWORK but the premise sounds promising, too. Sometimes that’s all it takes for me.
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time [movie]
ANGIE TOLD ME IT’S REALLY GOOD AND THAT’S WHAT MATTERS. Plus the premise sounds really good and worth my time. BUT ANGIE TOLD ME IT’S GOOD.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
”On the first day of high school a beautiful girl named Haruhi Suzumiya introduces herself as having “no interest in ordinary humans”. She asks for any aliens, time travelers, sliders or espers to join her. Watching her weird behaviour is Kyon who sits in front of Haruhi and is the only person who talks to her. When Kyon comments about Haruhi’s joining every club in school and then quitting he unwittingly gives Haruhi an idea to start her own after school club. Thereafter Kyon and several others find themselves dragged, literally, into the Save our world by Overloading it with fun Suzumiya Haruhi’s Brigade (the S.O.S. Brigade for short).” It sounds like cracky goodness. Maybe it’s not even cracky. But it sounds like goodness. And the artwork is pretty. IT JUST SOUNDS FUN! Do want to try. It has a sequel movie, to!

[Problematic Themes] Another tsundere-centered anime which may seem like problematic themes, depending on how you see it? “Despite Ryuji Takasu’s gentle personality, his eyes make him look like an intimidating delinquent. Class rearrangements on his second high school year put him together with his best friend, Yusaku Kitamura, and his hidden crush, Minori Kushieda. Along with these two comes Kushieda’s best friend, Taiga Aisaka. Her delicate appearance contrasts with her brutal personality. Secretly in love with Kitamura, Taiga agrees to help Ryuji with his love interest as long as he helps her get closer to hers.” There’s still room for the cute! I’ve watched only one ep so far, and chortled at Ryujui a lot cos y r an idiot sometimes.

First learned of this because of it’s live action movie. Again, I’m a sucker for family themes and this one just seems great. :3 “Going home from his grandfather’s funeral, thirty-year-old Daikichi is floored to discover that the old man had an illegitimate child with a younger lover. The rest of his family is equally shocked and embarrassed by this surprise development, and not one of them wants anything to do with the silent little girl, Rin Kaga. In a fit of anger, Daikichi decides to take her in himself. As Daikichi nurtures Rin, he started to understand the struggle while at the same time the joy of parenting.”

I’ve since given up the manga but I used to follow it extensively and I watched the two seasons of the anime. It was good but. Hmmm. I donno, I have a lot of reservations about it these days but I think that’s just because of how I’ve grown and come to look at it? It becomes heavily political, though, which is why I quit the manga. :| Also things were just getting too complex/heavy/characters were tweaking in ways I wasn’t sure I liked. BUT I REALLY LIKED IT WHILE I WAS READING AND WATCHING SO YOU KNOW.

This looks like it could be cracky, but at least fun if not cracky. And the characters sound a bit wacky and fun to explore and stuff. WHICH IS GREAT TO ME. “Set in a family restaurant in Hokkaido, the northern prefecture of Japan, 16-year-old high school student Sōta Takanashi works part-time along with his strange co-workers: Popura Taneshima, a high school girl who—despite being a year older than Sōta—is easily mistaken for a elementary/middle schooler, and Kyoko Shirafuji, the 28-year-old store manager who does not bother to do any work at all.” There is a sequel, I believe.

Hana Kimi was my first, and I feel it will ALWAYS be my favorite. To this day, while I tend to rank most manga I read around the same level, Hana Kimi is always held on a higher pedestal. I HAVE A LOT OF HANA KIMI FEELS. A LOT. Once I started reading it was impossible for me to stop. To this day I weep that no one ever made a cute, adorable craky anime about it.

ALFJDLFALDJFAKLFJA SERIOUSLY THERE IS LIKE THIS MASSIVE WAVE OF FEELINGS IN MY CHEST RIGHT NOW AND I CANNOT PUT THEM IN WORDS ;~; I devoured that manga. I was fueled by burning desperation and when it ended, I CONFESS TO FEELING EMPTY AND CONFUSED. Also I cried because that ending was glorious and beautiful and I FREAKING WEPT ALL OVER THE PLACE.
Skip Beat fills the ~void now but really. Nothing will EVER replace Hana Kimi for me. It’s also possibly why I cannot get into most other gender benders? I have a discussion with a friend of mine about how people TEND to have one favorite gender bender and their opinions are all based around that, and I think it’s true. I LOVED all the characters in Hana Kimi and… yeah. I just. IT’S MY ONE TRUE MANGA.
But man. MAN. I LOVE SKIP BEAT SOMETHING FIERCE. It was the first manga I ever BOUGHT - my friends bought my first Hana Kimis for me. *o* I wasn’t so sure about Skip Beat at first but DAMN I FELL IN LOVE WITH KYOKO. I feel that, while she still has the naive romantic shoujo heroine trope, she manages to differ what with her crazy anger and wild unpredictability. AND I COULD GO ON FOREVER ABOUT TSRUGA REN. OH.

Vampire Knight, I admittedly only want for the art. (Though in that shallow vein, I should just get Meru Puri for her art, cos I liked that story much better. And it’s only four volumes xD) I liked Vampire Knight for a while, but. :| It just got… COMPLICATED, hahaha. I followed this fab girl on LJ who would scanlate everything and explain things, which helped but man.
It was too complicated in the end. :|

The worst part is this arc is supposed to be intense. Ren acting as Cain Heel playing a violent role and nearly losing it on set is intense and should fill me with dread. And when I sit and read those chapters together, you really get that sense. But when you read one chapter per freaking month, you forget what even happened.
WAE IS IT DRAGGED OUT SO MUCH MY GOD.
This manga has been going on for aaaages. And okay, no, it’s no Bleach - but at least Bleach seems more frequent than this! I just… Goodness. It doesn’t seem Skip Beat has an end in sight. I’d totally be okay with that, but I’d like some sense of progress. Skip Beat is really good when you sit and read it all at once, but the wait drives me insaaaaane.
Also. Kyoko. My previous, naive, dumb dumb. When will you wake up and realize how OBVIOUSLY INTO YOU Ren is? He doesn’t exactly hide it, boo. Even PRESIDENT is aware. Just… Lololol give me some progress on the romance-front. How in the world can Kyoko remain so oblivious for so long.
AND IF NOT ROMANTIC PROGRESS WILL KYOKO EVER REALIZE REN IS CORN/KOUN?! THIS IS SUPER MAJOR AND I REALLY NEED GET REACTION. BECAUSE HELLO HE IS GET FAIRY PRINCE.

Um. I don’t read Skip Beat anymore (I’m sporadic with Manga anyway), but I just wanted to express admiration for your patience in sticking with it. Fun series, but FRUSTRATING.
It is SO hard and SO frustrating uggghhhh. It’s easier to wait for multiple chapters because they’re usually SO short. But waiting for multiple chapters to read means waiting like, half a freaking year. ;~; Ugh so agonizing. And development is SO. FREAKING. SLOW.
