it scares me how impermanent all my internet friendships are like you could just delete and i’d never see you again in my life or hear from you ever again and that makes me really sad

:| I… really hate the phrase “internet friendships”, because it just SOUNDS impermanent. And I stand to prove that friendships developed over the internet can last. I’ve known Ama longer than all but one of my offline friendships, honestly. I met her in 2003, when I was 15, and this year I will turn 24 and mark… nine? years of friendship. Nine. From a friendship developed between a girl in Puerto Rico and one who then-lived in Kansas.

You COULD delete your tumblr. But I like to have my extra options. People can always find me on Twitter. I can be found on the Facebook I never use. I use AIM daily to stay in contact with people. I even text! (And if I could text Ama and Angie, I would abuse it. Kraken knows allll about that.) I just like to think that, those who really care, will have their other ways, right? You can always ask me other ways to contact me, because I love all the friendships I’ve developed.

But I hate the idea that a friendship developed online can be any less lasting than one developed offline. Honestly, the people I’ve met online have been with me much longer than some I’ve known offline. I think they each have their merits and both online and offline friendships are important to me. Who else knows me better than Ama and Angie and Karen, really? Who else but Ama and Anila have watched me grow from an angsty 15-year-old teenager into a (hopefully more) level-headed 23-year-old ADULT?

It’s so weird to think that Ama has known me longer than anyone but Jamie - and yet SO natural.

But you shouldn’t think how impermanent these relationships are, but to ensure that they last, just the way you would with any offline relationship. Why should they be treated any different from one to the other?
